How to Create Product Bundles in Shopify

How to Create Product Bundles in Shopify

Product bundling is one of the most effective strategies to boost your Shopify store's revenue. When implemented correctly, bundles can dramatically increase average order value and improve inventory turnover. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about creating and optimizing product bundles in Shopify.

What is a “product bundle”?

Product bundles combine multiple complementary items sold together as a single purchasable unit, typically at a price lower than buying each item separately. From skincare regimens to tech accessories, bundling creates perceived value while solving customer problems.

For example, if you are planning to sell women's skincare products, you can create a bundle of daily and nighttime serums.

Bundles work because they simplify decision-making. Imagine a customer overwhelmed by 50 skincare products; a pre-selected bundle reduces choice paralysis and positions your brand as a trusted curator

From McDonald’s Happy Meals to Dyson’s styler-and-accessory kits, bundles are everywhere- and for good reason

Types of Product Bundles

Typically, there are six types of product bundling:

1. Pure Bundling (or Classic Bundling)

This type refers to products that are exclusively sold together.

For example, you may know the Microsoft Office Suite (also known as Microsoft 365) bundle. It is one of the best-chosen computer software packages, which includes Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

With the pure bundling method, customers can only purchase the full set. Single-item purchase is unavailable.

2. Mixed Bundling

I would say it is such a flexible bundling method which Items can be purchased individually or as a discounted bundle.

If pure bundling only includes individual items, mixed bundling can include any type of bundle having more than two products.

There are two common variants of Mixed bundling, which are:

  • Collection mix and match

  • And product mix and match

A typical example for mixed bundling is the Gym Membership plans, which include workout classes, spa and shower service, and a gift like whey or a workout supplement.

Another example is a fast food combo for a discount, which offers, for example, a dish of Jolly Spaghetti, a crispy French fried bucket, and six pieces of chicken thighs. Customers can choose to buy either a combo or each dish separately.

3. Cross-Category (or Cross-Sell) Bundling

With this bundling method, you will combine products that can be complementary items from different categories. For example: Pants with a t-shirt or hoodies, A smartphone bundled with a case and screen protector.

I will show you a real case of applying cross-sell bundling in education. We all know Udemy- The leading Global online course provider, right? How do you think a combo course of Digital Marketing Essentials and AI? That’s what Udemy provides in its “Digital Marketer Career Accelerator” package, to help the learner achieve their goals and expand more skills.

4. BOGO (Buy One, Get One)

Everyone loves gifts. So, what if we create a gift for our customers and boost sales at the same time?

Buy One, Get One (or BOGO) can help you implement this idea. With that bundling method, customers can buy a product and receive another item for FREE or with huge discounts.

For instance: “Buy a shirt, get a tie at 50% off”.

Using EcomRise: Upsell & Bundles, you can build your desired BOGO offer effortlessly.

Create an offer, set your BOGO bundle value and condition, and customize its look. You can make your unique bundle in just a few clicks. Learn more about how to configure the BOGO bundle here.

5. Frequently Bought Together

Some companies are really smart about putting together product bundles. They look at what people have bought together in the past, or just know from the type of products they sell what would naturally go well together.

ABERA does this nicely with their Folliculitis Shower Gel – they'll show you other products that complement it perfectly. It's like they're thinking, "What else would this person need to get the best out of this product?" It makes shopping so much smoother and helps you create a really effective routine.

6. Old Inventory Bundling

Instead of letting older inventory just sit there, why don’t we bundle it up and sell it as one?

With this bundling method, you can clear up your inventory space and save some money in the long run.

7. Occasional Bundling

Basically, occasional bundling is just putting a few related things together in one sale so people can get them for a better price.

For example, a beautiful bunch of roses, along with some yummy chocolates and a sweet card for this Valentine, a mini version of cleansing facial foams, toners, and suncream with SPF 50+ for her on International Women's Day.

Key Benefits of Product Bundling

Product bundling offers a wide range of benefits for Shopify store owners:

1- Bigger Shopping Carts (Cha-Ching!):

Smart bundling naturally encourages customers to spend more per transaction. When you combine complementary products at an appealing price point, customers perceive greater value in purchasing the collection rather than individual items. For example, if you own a beauty store where customers typically spend $15 on a facial cleanser, offering a complete skincare bundle (cleanser + toner + moisturizer) for $35 can more than double your average order value.

2- Higher sales:

Bundling encourages customers to spend more by offering more for slightly less. Instead of just buying one item, shoppers feel good about getting a “deal,” which increases the average order value without making it feel like a splurge.

3- Happier Customers = Repeat Customers:

People love a bargain, even more so when it feels exclusive. Bundles can make your customers feel like they’re getting premium value at a reduced price, and then you will build trust and satisfaction. Turning one-time buyers into loyal fans now is just a piece of cake.

4- Control inventory strategically:

Every business, including yours, usually has dead stock—those items consuming valuable warehouse space without generating revenue.

You can bundle slow-moving products with popular ones. The only thing you need is to create thoughtful combinations where products genuinely complement each other.

5- Stand Out from the Crowd:

With well-designed and valued bundles, your business will not only attract new shoppers but also differentiate itself from competitors.

6- Expand cross-selling and upselling opportunities:

Even though you're often giving a little discount with bundles, the fact that you're selling more overall can actually lead to bigger profits. Customers feel like they're getting a sweet deal, and you're moving more product – it's a win-win that boosts your bottom line.

Tips for Optimizing Product Bundles for Conversion

To make your bundles irresistible, follow these best practices:

1- Create Solution-Based Bundles

The most successful bundles solve complete customer problems, not just group random products. Kylie Cosmetics nailed this with their lip kits—combining liners and lipsticks to create a complete solution for perfectly matched lips. When building your bundles, ask: "What's the entire job my customer is trying to accomplish?" Then deliver that complete solution.

2- Master Price Bracketing Psychology

Strategic price bracketing drives customers toward your preferred bundle option. Spork Marketing saw an 8% conversion boost by introducing premium bundles that made mid-tier options appear more reasonable. I recommend a three-tier approach with your mid-tier bundle (where you want most customers to land) positioned as the clearly superior value, mark it as "Most Popular" to reinforce this perception.

3- Make Savings Tangible

How you present discounts dramatically impacts conversion. Show both original prices and bundle savings prominently—"$100 worth of products for $80" is far more compelling than just "$80." The research proves that concrete savings ("Save $20") convert better than percentage discounts because they feel more tangible to customers.

4- Pair Bestsellers with Discovery Items

Use high-demand products as gateways to introduce customers to underperforming inventory. As mentioned in the Product bundling’s key benefits, this strategy not only moves slower stock but also creates genuine discovery moments. For example, bundle your trusted moisturizer with that amazing but lesser-known vitamin C serum—your bestsellers have earned customer trust, leverage it.

5- Test and Evolve Your Bundles

Bundle optimization is never "one and done." Track bundle-specific metrics (conversion rates, AOV impact, inventory turnover) and continuously A/B test everything from item combinations to bundle names. You might be surprised how something as simple as renaming a bundle can boost conversion.

One of my clients saw continued strong product bundle revenue and orders in May, as their report shows. It highlights that bundle optimization is never "one and done"—even small tweaks like renaming can make a huge difference.

6- Create Genuine Urgency

Limited-time bundle offers tap into the fear of missing out (also known as FOMO) and can significantly boost conversion rates. Seasonal bundles, holiday specials, or flash offers create both immediate sales and train customers to watch for your offers. Just ensure your time limitations are genuine—today's customers can spot artificial urgency immediately.

Effective bundling isn't about random groupings with discounts—it's about crafting compelling value narratives that address customer needs while strategically achieving your business objectives, whether moving slow inventory or maximizing average order value. What bundle strategies have worked for your store?

Real-Life Examples of Successful Bundling on Shopify

Let’s look at some Shopify stores that have mastered product bundling:

Ever notice how the most successful online stores seem to have mastered the art of getting you to buy more than you initially planned? That's product bundling at work, and it's not just clever marketing—it's a science that's transforming e-commerce businesses on Shopify.

Beauty Industry Masters the Bundle

Kylie Cosmetics nailed it with their lip kit bundles, pairing liners with matching lipsticks. This wasn't just convenient—it positioned them as authorities in creating cohesive looks. Their 25% bundle discount drove a 73% higher conversion rate compared to individual products. Smart move.

Meanwhile, Beardbrand created their "Ultimate Grooming Bundle," combining $336 worth of products into a $252 package. They even threw in a lifetime community membership valued at $90. The result? A 19% increase in average order value. Their secret weapon was creating immersive landing pages that mimicked the in-store experience.

Fashion Finds Its Bundle Groove

RoottCo's data-driven approach caught my attention. They used Shopify's Bundles app to create themed clothing sets, resulting in $1.59M in revenue and a 15% conversion boost. What I love about their strategy is how they analyzed customer behavior to optimize bundles around seasonal trends and complementary colors.

Pura Vida Bracelets took a different angle with their stackable bundles.

Puravida’s Mix-and-match bundling offer

Buy 4+ bracelets and each one costs less.

Add limited-edition "waterproof" collaborations, creating artificial scarcity with the frequently bought together bundle, and you've got a formula for an over 25% increase in items per order. They essentially transformed individual pieces into collectible sets—genius!

Baby Products Bundle for Convenience

Lil Helper is the perfect example of solving a real customer problem. Their "Essentials Kits" combined diapers, wipes, and nursing accessories, generating $303,000 in just four months.

By positioning these as time-saving solutions for sleep-deprived parents, they achieved a 92% bundle adoption rate among first-time buyers. As a parent myself, I can't overstate how valuable convenience is when you're running on two hours of sleep.

The Psychology Behind Successful Bundles

The most effective bundles I've seen employ decoy pricing (making you feel like you're getting a deal) and partitioned pricing (breaking down what each item would cost). That sweet spot discount range of 20-30% seems to hit the psychological trigger that converts browsers to buyers.

What fascinates me is how technological elements elevate these strategies. Landing page optimization, inventory management solutions, and behavioral analytics create the foundation for bundle success. RoottCo's heatmap analysis reveals that 63% of bundle viewers skipped individual product sections, leading them to focus on lifestyle imagery instead of itemized lists—talk about letting data guide design!

The future clearly points toward AI-driven personalized bundles and AR-enabled previews. The brands that embrace these technologies first will likely see the biggest rewards.

What bundle strategies have you implemented in your Shopify store? I'd love to hear what's working for you in the comments below.

Conclusion

Product bundling isn’t just a sales tactic- it’s a way to deepen customer relationships. By offering thoughtfully curated packages, you position your brand as a helpful guide rather than a faceless retailer. Whether you opt for Shopify’s straightforward tool or EcomRise’s advanced features, the key is to start small, test relentlessly, and always prioritize customer value. Now, go create bundles that make your customers say, “I didn’t know I needed but I love it!”

FAQs

1- How do product bundles help increase sales?

Product bundles can help increase sales by encouraging customers to buy more items at once, often at a perceived discount, which boosts the average order value. They also help move inventory by pairing slow-selling items with popular ones and make shopping convenient by offering complementary products together. Research suggests that upselling and cross-selling through bundles can contribute to 10-30% of e-commerce revenues, with popular bundle types like Buy One Get One (BOGO) being favored by many customers.

2- Can I create bundles without third-party apps in Shopify?

Yes, it seems likely you can create basic bundles, like Fixed and Multipack types, without third-party apps by using Shopify's free Bundles app, available on all plans. For more complex bundles, such as Mix-and-match, you might need third-party apps. There are also manual methods, but they can be limiting, like requiring manual inventory updates.

3- What is the EcomRise Product Bundle extension?

The EcomRise Product Bundle extension is an addon developed via the integration between EComposer and EcomRise. This extension allows merchants to undle and showcase sale-boosting product bundles in the EComposer-built webpage template. 100% compatible.

To know how to get and configure that extension, please check out this article:

4- How do I track the performance of my bundles?

You can likely track bundle performance using Shopify's built-in analytics, especially the product bundles report in the new analytics, which shows metrics like total sales by bundle and components. Many bundle apps also offer their own analytics for deeper insights, and general sales metrics like total sales and average order value can help gauge effectiveness.

5- Can I customize the look of my bundles in Shopify?

Yes, it appears you can customize the look of your bundles in Shopify, particularly with third-party apps that offer design options like changing colors, texts, and using custom CSS. The native Shopify Bundles app may have a standard appearance, but apps like Bundler provide extensive customization to match your store's branding.
